John Jenkins (governor)

John Jenkins (died 1681) was an English military who served as governor of Albemarle (now North Carolina) in three times: in 1672–1675, 1676–1677, and 1680–1681.
== Biography ==
John Jenkins was born in England. He went to America in 1650s and initially settled in Northampton County, Virginia. In 1662 he had moved to the Albemarle County.〔 (Ncpedia:John Jenkins ) Posted by by Dennis F. Daniels.〕 However, more late he returned to England where he married, returning to East of the modern United States about 1650. Now known as "Captain", he was one of the earliest settlers in Carolina. He had located on the Perquinas River before the grant to the Lords Proprietors and, conforming to the instructions of the King, took out a patent for his land from Governor Berkeley, Governor of Virginia. This occurred in 25 September 1663. Captain Jenkins became a man of considerable importance. In 1670 he was deputy of the Earl of Craven and had risen to the dignity of Colonel, and was senior member of the Council.〔 (Documenting of American South: Lieutenant Colonel John Jenkins )〕
When Governor Carteret left Albemarle in the spring of 1673 and went to England, he transferred the administration of the colony to Colonel Jenkins, as deputy governor. However, Jenkins seems to have had considerable trouble with law-breakers of the colony. In fall 1675, after the faction of Thomas Eastchurch was elected to govern the General Assembly of North Carolina, being Eastchurch appointment Governor and Speaker of the Assembly,〔 〔 (Carolina Governors - John Jenkins - Carolana ). Written by J.D.Lewis, 2007.〕 Eastchurch imprisoned Jenkins for perform various offenses.〔 (Culpeper Rebellion ). North Carolina History project. 2015 John Locke Foundation.〕〔 〔 However, in the spring of 1676, some supporters of Jenkins helped him to get out from prison and return the charge of governor of the region. Eastchurch traveled to London in order "to appeal to the Lords Proprietors".〔 After return to government of Carolina, Jenkins dissolved the assembly.〔
Eastchurch achievement convince to such persons that the problems that had been developed in Albemarle were caused for the leaders of the anti-proprietary faction. So, the proprietors decided appoint to Eastchurch as governor of the region, but during their honeymoon on the Nevis Island,〔 he left the governor (on an interim basis) to Thomas Miller.〔〔 However, Jenkins seems to have serious differences arose between him and Thomas Miller. The crimes that he caused and the revolt that this originated (Culpeper's Rebellion) made that he was arrested. Jenkins was an of the six persons who exercised as judges in the court that tried against Miller.〔 So, the General Assembly deposed Governor Jenkins.〔 However, he was upheld by a majority of the deputies, and after considerable controversy he was again elected Governor of Carolina. He had the support of the Legislature, also, but he did not long survive his second term in office.
Jenkins died in Perquimans County, North Carolina, in 17 December 1681.〔
